Attack on Fulbaria protestors
We are seeing a dangerous trend of using coercive means by the law enforcing agencies in handling any form of protest instead of finding an amicable solution to the problem. In the recent case, two persons including a college teacher were killed and 100 others injured as police swooped on demonstrators agitating for nationalisation of the college at Fulbaria in Mymesingh.
For the past one and half months the teachers, students and employees of the college had been staging protests demanding nationalisation of their institution. It was alleged that a poor performing institution was selected for nationalisation ignoring the old and reputed college. The police action on protestors without apparently any provocation is in no way justified. Though the police authority denied any such action, the pictures showing police inside the college premise beating and kicking protestors belie their claim.
The government should investigate the role of police in this case and take stern action against the guilty ones. The authorities should also consider the demand of the protestors sincerely. If the college claims to have better credentials for nationalisation shouldn't the government accord their claim due consideration?
