Woman held over gang rape of 8th grader

Cops say

A woman was arrested in a case filed last night over the gang rape of an eighth grader in Gazipur.

Police arrested Urmee, 18, wife of Kabir Hossain of Nayanpur village under Shreepur upazila after the victim’s mother filed the case against her and three other people around 11:30pm yesterday, report our Gazipur correspondent quoting police.

The other accused –- Sharif, 18, Suzon, 19 and Sharif, 20 of the same village -- were on the run, said sub inspector Nazmul Saqib of Shreepur Police Station.

The mother, a garment worker, said their neighbour Urmee on Tuesday evening took her daughter to the birthday party of Suzon, who lives at the same locality.

At the party, the girl became unconscious after having beverage, the mother said.

Later, she was taken to a nearby bush and raped, she added.

Around 10:00pm on that day, the girl was rescued by the family members from in front of their house, victim’s mother said.

The girl was sent to Shaheed Tazuddin Medical College Hospital for medical examination, said SI Nazmul.

Police are conducting operations to arrest the other accused, the police official said.
