Thief beaten to death in Laxmipur
An alleged thief was beaten to death by a mob in Ramganj upazila of Laxmipur district early yesterday.
The dead is Muslim Mia, 45, son of Sikandar Ali of Augaankhil village in the upazila.
Police yesterday detained Ruhul Amin, 33, Kawsar, 32, Sayem, 27, Shamsunnahar, 28, and Sabrina Akhter, 32, for interrogation.
Police said Muslim entered the house of Bachchu Dewan, an expatriate in Saudi Arabia, at Pashchim Angarpara village in the dead of night and stole gold ornaments and valuables.
Hearing shouts of the house members, villagers rushed in, chased the thief and caught him. They beat him up mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot.
Contacted, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nasim Mia said police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Muslim was accused in two theft cases filed with Ramganj Police Station, the ASP said.
Away in Sunamganj, a suspected thief was killed and another hurt in a clash between two rival groups of the gangs at Kamargaon village in Salla upazila early yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased is Abdul Jalil.
Both the gangs attacked each other with sharp weapons that left Jalil dead and Jamir, 55, injured.
