Five shops gutted

Five shops were gutted in a fire at Katherpool Masjid Market in the district town early yesterday. The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop at around 3:00am and soon engulfed the adjoining shops, said a fire official. On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the flames after an hour of frantic effort. The affected shop owners claimed that the loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 1.5 crore.
Body recovered

Police recovered the body of an unidentified man, aged about 65, from a paddy field at Majdhi village in Srimangal upazila on Sunday. Locals found the body in the field at around 11:30am and informed the police. The law enforcers then reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Md Jalal Uddin, sub-inspector of Srimangal Police Station.
Youth electrocuted
Unb, Magura
A youth was electrocuted at Bhayna intersection in the district town yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 28, son of Rabiul Islam of Mirzapur village in Sadar upazila. Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said Rafiqul came in contact with a live electric wire while he was doing electrical work inside a building in the area. He was taken to Magura Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, said the OC.
Mobile shop looted

Criminals looted cash and other valuables from a mobile shop after stabbing its owner at Baghachra Bazar in Sharsha upazila on Sunday night. The injured is Rafiqul Islam, 35, son of Sheikh Nur Mohammad of Raripukur village. He was admitted to a local clinic. Police and witnesses said a gang swooped on the shop at around 9:00pm and stabbed Nur Mohammad indiscriminately, leaving him injured. They then took away Tk 2 lakh and some mobile phones sets, said Bayezid Ahmed, sub-inspector of Baghachra Police Outpost.
Death threat to FF

A freedom fighter (FF) of Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj district on Monday received death threat. The victim is Abdul Mutalib, a resident of Ikortoli village. The FF said “A gang of 2/3, led by one Chanchal Miah, 20, son of Abdul Ahad of the village, entered my house at night and threatened me with death as I gave deposition against war criminal Syed Kawsar,” said the victim. He filed a general diary with Chunarughat Police Station, said OC Md Iqbal.
