Shafik gets SC bail, no bar to release
The Supreme Court today granted bail to journalist Shafik Rehman in a case filed for alleged attempt to abduct and murder prime minister's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
There is no legal bar for Shafik to get released from jail following the SC order, Advocate M Asaduzzaman, a lawyer for Shafik, told The Daily Star.
The bail order was granted to him for three months or until submission of the case’s charge sheet. If police submits the charge sheet before three months, his bail will be expired, the apex court said.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order after hearing Shafik’s appeal petition seeking bail in the case.
Earlier on June 7, the High Court rejected a bail petition of Shafik in this case.
Later he filed the appeal with the SC challenging the HC judgement and sought bail in the case.
Shafik was arrested on April 16 from his residence in Dhaka in connection with the case filed for alleged attempt to abduct and murder of Sajib Wazed Joy.
