Two die while cleaning septic tank in Joypurhat
Two people, including the house owner, died and another fell sick after inhaling toxic gas trapped inside a septic tank in in Joypurhat’s Panchbibi upazila on Monday.
The deceased are Mohammad Ali, 35, son of late Amzad Hossain of Shalaipur village in the upazila, and labourer Naim Hossain, 25, son of Nazrul Islam of the same village.
Naim’s elder brother Zakaria Hossain, 32, who also fell sick, is now undergoing treatment at Joypurhat Modern Hospital.
Quoting locals and witnesses, Sub Inspector (SI) of Panchbibi Police Station Tofayel Hasan said house owner Mohammad Ali and Naim fell sick when they climbed down into a septic tank at Shalaipur village around 11:30am.
As they were not responding, Zakaria also went down inside the tank in a bid to rescue the duo, but they all became ill inhaling the toxic gas inside the tank, the sub inspector added.
Being informed by locals, fire fighters rushed to the spot and recovered two bodies.
They also rescued Zakaria in critical condition and sent him to the hospital.
Earlier, on July 31 this year, six people died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a septic tank at Zafarpur village in Akkelpur upazila of the district.
