Policeman, stepmother remanded
A Mymensingh court yesterday sent a sub-inspector (SI) of police and his stepmother to jail after placing them on two days' remand.
SI Mohammad Ali, 50, son of Ali Fakir, and his stepmother Firoza Khatun, 48, were arrested on Monday on charge of killing a neighbour in Andhariapara village of Phulbaria upazila.
Md Hafiz Al Asad, judge of Cognizance Court-2, delivered the order after the accused were produced before the court with five days' remand prayer for each.
Sheikh Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbaria Police Station, quoting the neighbour's family members and locals, said SI Mohammad Ali's son Riad Ahmed, 20, killed neighbour Selim Mia, 38, a day labourer, in the police officer's house with the help of a group of youths.
The police officer's stepbrother Mohabbat Ali and nephew Farhan brought Selim to the house when SI Mohammad Ali was away. Selim was later found with critical injuries in a cowshed of the house from where police seized a towel, rope and a bloodstained shirt.
Selim died on Sunday at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, the OC said, adding that Selim and Riad used to take drugs together.
