Onions to be sold at Tk 36 per kg via e-commerce platforms

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has started selling onions at Tk 36 per kg through e-commerce companies to prevent price hike and to ensure the kitchen item is readily available for middle class buyers.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi today inaugurated the programme titled "Onion at Home" as chief guest through a Zoom platform, said a press release.

A buyer can initially procure three kgs of onions, under the initiative. Five e-commerce companies of the country will conduct the e-shop.

Commerce Ministry has taken the initiative to import onions in large quantities and sell it in the open market at affordable prices, the minister said in his speech.

"For those who can't afford to buy from truck sales, TCB, in collaboration with e-commerce, has made arrangements to deliver affordable onions at home," he added.

Initially, the sale of onions through e-commerce platforms will only take place in Dhaka and Chattogram, he informed.

Seeking cooperation from buyers and sellers, the minister said TCB will gradually sell onions in all parts of the country through e-commerce.
