Ekushey Padak winner Prof Mujibur Rahman Devdas passes away
Ekushey Padak winner Mujibur Rahman Devdas, professor of Mathematics Department of Rajshahi University, passed away on Monday due to old age complications. He was 90.
"Prof Devdas passed away at home in Mahurul village under Sadar upazila of Joypurhat district around 10am on Monday," said RU Proctor Prof Lutfor Rahman.
He was buried in the evening at the family graveyard at his village, he added.
Prof Devdas was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015 for his contributions to the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
He had taken the name "Devdas" in 1971 as a symbolic protest against the Pakistani occupation army's brutal persecution of Hindus in Rajshahi.
Meanwhile, his decision of changing his name had cost him a lot. The Pakistan army caught him and put in a torture cell for about five months.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of Mujibur Rahman.
In a condolence message, she said Dr Rahman had created a unique example of bravery for the motherland after being tortured physically and mentally by Pakistani forces during the Liberation War.
The PM prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy for his bereaved family members.
