Coal-laden vessel sinks in Passur channel of Mongla port
A cargo vessel carrying coal sank in the Katakhali area of Pashur River today due to excessive water current.
The cargo ship "MV Ifsia Mahin" was carrying 510 metric tonnes of coal against its capacity of 480MT, report our Bagerhat correspondent quoting a Mongla Port official.
"The ship had 10 sailors on board and they were able to swim ashore safely," said Harbour Master of Mongla Port Authority Sheikh Fakar Uddin quoting the owner of the vessel.
"The ship's rope tied to the buoy detached due to the strong current of water today around 12pm. At that time about 10-12 ships, including the vessel, moved away from the buoy. While moving, MV Ifsia Mahin collided with one of the cargo ships and a crack was made on its left side causing it to sink," Fakar added.
The main channel of the port was safe and the ship sunk outside the Pasur channel, he said.
