Man gets life for raping girl after abduction
A court here yesterday sentenced a man to life term rigorous imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old schoolgirl after abduction in 2008.
The convict, Monsur-e-Rasul Rubel, is a resident of Betua village in Daganbhuiyan upazila of the district, reports a correspondent.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Nilufar Sultana delivered the judgement in the presence of Rubel. He was later sent to prison.
The court also fined him Tk 20,000. In default he is to suffer one year more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Rubel abducted the girl, a Class VII student of Daganbhuiyan Girls' School, on her way to the school in January 12, 2008.
Rubel took the girl to Chittagong, confined her to a house and raped her, according to the statement of the girl recorded in the court.
Victim's father lodged a case with Daganbhuiyan Police Station the following day.
Police arrested Rubel and rescued the girl from Chittagong after 4/5 days of the incident.
After investigation, police pressed charges against Rubel the same year.
Away in Chandpur, A court here yesterday sentenced a man to two years' imprisonment for torturing his wife for dowry at Ibrahimpur village under Sadar upazila in 2011, according to our correspondent.
The convict is Monu Majhi, 32, son of late Arshad Ali of the village. Judge Ramani Ranjan Chakma of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, Chandpur, pronounced the verdict in the afternoon.
According to the prosecution, Arshad had been demanding Tk 50,000 from his father-in-law as dowry for long. He locked in an altercation with his wife Ayesha Begum, 20, over the issue on the night of November 11, 2011. At one stage Arshad beat up Ayesha, leaving her seriously injured.
Ayesha's father Osman Miji of the same village took his daughter to Chandpur Sadar Hospital the following day and filed a case with Chandpur Model Police Station on November 25, accusing Monu Majhi.
After examining the case record and witnesses, the judge punished Monu Majhi.
