CEC to meet president tomorrow
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad will hold a courtesy call with President Abdul Hamid tomorrow.
“The meeting will be held at Bangabhaban around 3:30pm,” Joynal Abedin, press secretary to the president, told The Daily Star.
He, however, did not give details about agenda of the meeting rather said it would be just a ‘courtesy meeting.’
Contacted, Election Commission Secretary Muhammad Abdulla said only the CEC will hold the meeting with the president.
Neither any election commissioners nor any officials of the commission will accompany the CEC, he added.
The meeting is going to be held when BNP demands for reconstitution of the EC ahead of the next general election.
Ruling Awami League (AL) wants the new EC to be formed by a search committee under the jurisdiction of the president, a power vested on him by the constitution.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has recently come with a proposal to reconstitute the EC on the basis of "consensus" of all political parties.
Besides, the civil society members have also been demanding to formulate a law for reconstitution of the EC for the sake of free and fair national election.
The tenure of the incumbent EC will be expired in February next year.
