Cop sent to jail for sexually harassing, torturing widow

A court here on Monday sent a police officer to jail after rejecting his bail prayer in a case filed for torturing and sexually harassing a widow.
The accused is Abu Bakkar Siddique, a sub-inspector at Bangladesh Police Academy at Sarda in Rajshahi.
KG Mostafa, judge of Special Tribunal for Prevention of Women and Children Repression court, passed the order after the SI surrendered before the court.
The court issued arrest warrant against him on April 10, said Public Prosecutor Khandker Md Rafique Hachhnain.
According to the case statement, one Ambia Khatun of Roghunath village in Kounia upazila filed a case with Kaunia police station against her four stepbrothers over a disputed land on January 1 in 2012.
The following night, a police team, led by Abu Bakkar Siddique, the then SI of the police station, arrested the victim, stepsister of Ambia Khatun, although she was not accused in the case.
Police then beat her up mercilessly at the custody till dawn and at one stage, the SI harassed her sexually.
The victim then went to the PS to lodge a case against seven policemen, including Abu Bakkar Siddique, but police refused to register the case.
Later, she filed a case with the court in this connection on January12, 2012.
