Sampan procession held to save mother hilsa in Chandpur
A massive awareness rising campaign to protect mother hilsa has been undertaken in Haimchar upazila of Chandpur, as the government banned netting hilsa between October 12 and November 2 in an area stretching 100 kilometres in the Meghna river.
With slogans like "Won't catch mother hilsa, won't harm the country; Protect mother Hilsa, increase national wealth", Haimchar Upazila Parishad yesterday organised two separate rallies -- one on its premises and another on the river's coast -- attended by people from different strata, including politicians and fisherfolks.
Starting at the Katakhali point at 11:00am, the river rally paraded through a 10-kilometre route and ended at Char Bhairabi.
On Sunday, the Upazila Parishad held another rally on its premises that was attended by about 10,000 fisherfolks.
Lawmaker Dr Dipu Moni attended the Sunday's rally as the chief guest, while Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Md Abdus Sabur Mondal and Superintendent of Police Shamsunnahar were special guests.
