‘No extortion in transport sector’
Leaders of Dhaka Road Transport Owners-Workers Association (DRTOWA) yesterday claimed that there is no extortion in the transport sector of the country.
“Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik-Sramik Oikya League’s (BSPMSOL) claim that there is extortion in the transport sector is false, fabricated and motivated,” DRTOWA joint convenor Abul Kalam said at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club.
Kalam further said, “Our transport sector leaders, including Khandaker Enayetullah and secretary general of Bangladesh Transport Owners’ Association, are not involved in any extortion. It’s BSPMSOL secretary Bachchu who is an extortionist, killer and fraud.”
On Tuesday, BSPMSOL leaders arranged a press conference, urging the government to conduct drives in the transport sector in order to put an end to corruption and harassment by “godfathers and police”.
BSPMSOL secretary Ismail Hossain Bachchu in a written statement said extortionists collect around Tk 1.65 crore every day in Dhaka’s transport sector, and DRTOWA leaders are also involved in it.
Abul Kalam also demanded the arrest of BSPMSOL leaders, including Bachchu and SM Shah Alam, claiming that they are involved in terrorist activities and embezzlement.
