Hossain Zillur for visionary Ctg mayor
Chittagong needs prudent and visionary leadership to turn it into an international standard city by 2030, former caretaker government adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman said yesterday, pointing out three main areas which should be the focus of all development interventions.
He expounded on his ideas in a keynote speech at a roundtable, organised by Chittagong Research Initiative (CRI) ahead of the April 28 city corporation election.
Firstly, unplanned urbanisation, which has given birth to waterlogging, a messy waste management, traffic jams, and a shortage of drinking water, must be put on check, he said in the written statement.
Insincerity and incoordination also hamper the solution of the problems, he said.
Secondly, the economic possibility of the city as one of the major connectivity hubs in Southeast Asia should be kept in mind in formulating any strategy for the development of the city and it should include the greater Chittagong -- Mirsarai on the north, Cox's Bazar on the south, and Fatikchhari-Ramgarh on the east.
Finally, the central government must pay adequate attention to the necessities of Chittagong.
BGMEA First Vice President Nasir Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and East Delta University Vice Chancellor Prof M Sekander Khan addressed the meeting among others.
