Half of female RMG workers face spousal violence

UK aid-funded study of icddr,b, BSR finds

Over a half of female garment workers in the country face spousal violence and of them 40 percent reported symptoms of depression, revealed a survey conducted over the past one year.

In general, 27 percent of married women face such violence, found the study funded by UK aid and released by International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) and BSR's HER Project in the capital yesterday.

The survey was an outcome of a project titled “Measuring the Effect of HER respect: An Intervention Addressing Violence against Female Garment Workers in Four Factories of Bangladesh”, said an icddr,b press release.

This research shows that a worker having savings of above Tk 50,000 increased her vulnerability to violence several times higher than the ones having fewer savings.
