Green groups call for a cleaner Dhaka
Speakers at a programme in the capital yesterday urged the government to take effective steps to make Dhaka a dust and smoke-free city.
They came up with the demand while addressing a bicycle rally held to create awareness among people to keep Dhaka clean.
The rally was jointly organised by Paribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba), Environmental Science Department of Stamford University of Bangladesh, Jana Udyog and Bangladesh Cycle Lane Bastabayan Parishad, in front of the national museum.
Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University, Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique said, “We have to build the city as a green one, where the next generation can grow up in a healthy environment.”
He also said to reduce smoke and keep the city's air clean, bicycle use should be encouraged and separate cycles lanes have to be allocated.
Dr Enamul Haq, a cultural personality, said people want a liveable city and they have to obey civic norms such as keeping their surroundings clean.
Poba President Abu Naser Khan and head of Environmental Science Department of Stamford University of Bangladesh, Dr Kamruzzaman Majumder addressed the programme. Vice Chancellor of Stamford University, Professor Mohammad Ali Naqi presided over it. 545454
