Four to walk gallows for killing Gazipur schoolboy
A Gazipur court yesterday sentenced four people including two siblings to death for killing a schoolboy at Pubail in the city in August 2004.
The condemned convicts are Iqbal Hossain Bhuiyan, 32, and his brother Md Shakil Bhuiyan, 30, sons of Abdul Hamid Bhuiyan; Zaman Sarker, 32, son of Afzal Hossain Sarker of Pubail; and Abu Sayem, 34, son of Mujibur Rahman of Kurigram. The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each.
According to the prosecution, Zaman had proposed to marry Rokhsana, daughter of Hasan Khandker of Pubail, which Rokhsana's family turned down.
Outraged, Zaman on August 10, 2004 abducted her brother Mamum, then an eighth-grader of a local school, who was found dead in a septic tank adjacent to one Shahjahan Bhuiyan's house, three days after his abduction.
The victim's father filed a murder case with Joydebpur Police Station against seven people.
After examining the records and 15 witnesses, Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan gave the verdict. He, however, acquitted three other accused as the allegations against them could not be proved.
