Govt to take steps soon to raise mushroom cultivation: Agriculture minister
Agriculture Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque today said the government will take steps to exploit the possibilities of mushroom cultivation soon as expanding cultivation will play a vital role in the economy.
"We will strengthen the mushroom development institute and horticulture centres soon to discover a new variety of mushroom as its popularity and extension of its cultivation would contribute to our economy," he told a views exchange online meeting with mushroom growers and entrepreneurs from the ministry's conference room.
"Bangladesh has huge potential in mushroom cultivation and we have to utilise the maximum potential of its cultivation," said the minister.
"Extension of mushroom cultivation and raising its popularity will resolve the country's huge unemployment problem and play a significant role in our economy", he added.
The minister called for training officials, growers and entrepreneurs -- comprising mostly small, marginal and landless farmers -- on mushroom cultivation, which would help expand its cultivation and create local and international markets for the cash crop.
Currently, the country is annually producing approximately 40,000 tonnes of mushroom worth Tk 800 crore, said the minister, adding that Bangladesh has scope to export mushrooms to various countries.
