Container movement from Ctg port resumes after 8hrs
Container movement from Chittagong port resumed this afternoon as prime mover-trailer workers called off their strike after eight hours.
Prime Mover-Trailer Sramik Union, a platform for the members who transport goods from Chattogram Port to various depots, went on the indefinite strike from 6:00am today, demanding arrest of the killers of one of their fellows.
The strike was withdrawn around 2:00pm after the deputy commissioner of Chittagong in a meeting with the union members informed that the main accused of the murder case, Masum, surrendered before the court, said Md Mainuddin, president of the union.
The strike disrupted the cargo movement between the port and 19 private inland container depots (ICDs) for eight hours, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Owing to the strike, imported container that reach the port were not transported to the 18 ICDs (Inland Container Depots) in Chattogram. However, the containers were moved by Prime-Movers Trailer from the port to the ICDs
Shahjahan Saju, 48, a driver of Tahsin Enterprise, was shot dead inside one of its motor garages in Kalu Shah shrine area of Sitakunda on Wednesday.
Protesting the murder and demanding punishment of the killers, Abu Bakkar Siddiqui, general secretary of the union, announced the strike at Chattogram Press Club yesterday.
“The murder took place on Wednesday and police told us they would take action in three days. But no action was taken even after four days, which is why we are staging the protest,” Prime Mover-Trailer Sramik Union General Secretary Abu Bakkar Siddik told The Daily Star soon after enforcing the strike.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (BICDA) Secretary Ruhul Amin Sikder said movement of containers between port and the ICDs has been halted owing to the strike, however goods are being transported all over the country from the ICDs.
After the murder, victim’s wife Shahida Akhter filed a case with Sitakunda Police Station accusing Md Masum, another employee of the firm.
