BD women start poorly
The Bangladesh women's chess team made a disastrous start in the 41st Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway yesterday as they lost by 1-3 points against an unfancied Ghana side. Only WFM Nazrana Khan Eva managed to win her board while WIM Shamima Akter Liza, WIM Rani Hamid and WFM Zakia Sultana lost their respective boards against unrated Ghanaian opponents.
The Bangladesh women's team had finished in 52nd position out of 125 teams in the 40th Chess Olympiad in Turkey in 2012 while this time they have a ranking of 59 with an average rating of 2027 points.
The men's team meanwhile had taken a 2-0 points lead against 2274-rated Zimbabwe team, with GM Niaz Murshed and IM Minhazuddin Ahmed winning their boards.
