BCC halts BIWTA eviction drive
An eviction drive of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) in Steamer Ghat area of Barisal city came to a stop within an hour as the Barisal City Corporation (BCC) authorities intervened in the affairs claiming the land to be its own.
Executive Magistrate Md Qamruzzaman, who conducted the eviction drive of behalf of BIWTA, said they had started the drive around 11:00am.
But the chief executive officer of BCC asked the magistrate to stop the drive over the phone and claimed ownership of the land.
The magistrate, however, said both BIWTA and BCC had agreed to sit within next three days with documents supporting ownership of the land, and the drive would remain postponed till then.
Nikhil Chandra Das, chief executive officer of BCC, said none except the BCC had the jurisdiction to evict anything from the land owned by the city corporation.
Therefore, they informed the matter to the magistrate, and he postponed the drive till a decision is made, the CEO said.
Abul Bashar Miah, deputy director of BIWTA, said about 300 illegal structures were built on the land owned by BIWTA.
