Rajshahi BNP candidates demand CEC’s resignation

BNP candidates of all the six constituencies of Rajshahi district today demanded resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda and immediate deployment of army with magistracy power.

The candidates placed their demands at a press conference at Anurag Community Centre in Rajshahi city around 11:30am.

They demanded the CEC’s resignation as the BNP candidates and their supporters are being barred from electioneering allegedly by the Awami League men and police forces.

Police asked the campaigners to leave the area as police cannot provide security to the BNP campaigners, Abu Hena, BNP candidate of Rajshahi-4 constituency, claimed while talking to the journalists.

The AL men fire blank shots so that BNP men cannot campaign in their areas, Mizanur Rahman Minu, BNP candidate of Rajshahi-2 constituency, claimed.

On behalf of Md Abu Sayeed Chan, BNP candidate of Rajshahi-6, his son Rakibul Hasan was present at the briefing. The son claimed that AL men threatened his and his family.

He further said Abu Sayeed kept in the jail “unlawfully” ahead of election.

“Bangladesh state minister for foreign affairs Md Shahriar Alam is the AL candidate from Rajshahi-6 who ordered to keep his competitor, my father, in jail,” Rakibul said.

The lower court is not giving him bail despite High Court’s order of bail, Rakib also alleged.
