Fakhrul blasts govt over 'attacks on opposition leaders'

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today blamed Awami League-led government for not giving space to the opposition candidates in carrying out their campaigns ahead of the December 30 national election.

The government has established a reign of terror in the country by letting loose administration and law enforcement agencies including police against the candidates and supporters of the “Sheaf of Paddy” electoral symbol of BNP, he alleged.

Fakhrul came up with the allegation while addressing an election rally at Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency as part of his two-day election campaign in the area.

“I have been attacked during my electioneering. Jatiya Oikyafront leader Dr Kamal Hossain and others came under attack today. We are not allowed to carry out our electioneering across the country,” Fakhrul said.

Criticising Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said, “She (PM) assured us that no one will be arrested illegally after announcement of the polls schedule but she did not keep her words.”

Claiming that there is no free, fair and congenial atmosphere for the upcoming general election, Fakhrul said the government does not want the election be held.

“The sign of the ruling camp will fade away if the upcoming general election is held in free and fair manner,” he added.

Urging his party men to stay united, Fakhrul said they will have to face more challenging situation in the coming days.

“Our chance of victory will be slimmer if there is any rift in the party,” he said.

He added that there is no alternative but to win the election to free BNp Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now in jail.
