BNP candidate for Satkhira-4 arrested

BNP Candidate for Satkhira-4 (Shyamnagar and Kaliganj) constituency and Jamaat leader GM Nazrul Islam was arrested in connection with a case filed over plotting subversive acts.

He was arrested along with three other leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami from Ismailpur village of Shyamnagarupazila around 1:30pm, our local correspondent reports quoting police.

The three other arrestees are Maulana Abdul Bari, chairman of Shyamnagar Upazila Parishad, the party’s Office Secretary Sheikh Abdul Bari and Padmapukur Union unit Jamaat Ameer Abdur Rab.

Officer-In-Charge of Shyamnagar Police Station Abul Kalam said Nazrul was wanted in 12 cases and the rest of the arrestees are also wanted in several cases.

“They were arrested as their arrest warrants reached the police station instantly,” he said.

Contacted, Azizur Rahman, publicity secretary of Satkhira unit Jamaat, alleged that they were being barred from electioneering and their leaders and activist are constantly being threatened.

The BNP candidate was arrested while he was holding a meeting to fix their election strategy, he also said.

He also claimed that GM Nazrul Islam and Abdul Bari secured bail in all the cases.
