Army deployment from Dec 24: EC secy

The Election Commission will deploy army from December 24 as a striking force across the country during the 11th parliamentary election.

“Army will be deployed from December 24 as striking force and it will remain in the field until January 2,” EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told The Daily Star.

According to a proposal of the EC, Border Guard Bangladesh, the paramilitary force, might be deployed across the country from December 24 to January 2, he said.

But the final decision over BGB’s deployment will be taken on Saturday, the EC secretary added.

Earlier in the day, the commission held a meeting with lawmen and intelligence officers in Agargaon of Dhaka.

Yesterday, Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam said army will be deployed as a striking force across the country five days before the election.

11TH JS ELECTION SCHEDULE

The 11th general election will be held on December 30.

As per the polls schedule, the deadline for filing the nomination papers was November 28.

The authorities had fixed December 2 for scrutiny and December 9 the last date for nomination withdrawal. The election campaign has begun December 10.

WHY OPPOSITION FOR ARMY DEPLOYMENT?

Jatiya Oikyafront, an alliance of Bangladesh’s major opposition party BNP and several other parties, have long been demanding army deployment for holding a free, fair and credible election.

They fear of vote rigging by the ruling party, citing reasons that the election is going to take place under the partisan administration of Sheikh Hasina.

While declaring the first election schedule, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said that army will be deployed as a striking force for aiding the civil administration.
