Millat’s candidacy from Jamalpur stays rejected

Jamalpur-1 candidate from BNP tent, M Rashiduzzaman Millat’s hopes of candidacy was dashed today after the Supreme Court upheld his rejection.

A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed “no order” on Millat’s appeal against a previous High Court order.

Thereby, he cannot contest the election, Advocate Khurshid Alam, the lawyer for Awami League candidate Abul Kalam Azad, who filed the petition, told The Daily Star.

Previously, the Election Commission had allowed Millat’s candidacy, which was rejected upon the Awami League candidate’s challenge at the High Court.

A trial court sentenced Millat to seven years' imprisonment in a corruption case during the tenure of the military-backed caretaker government.
