Contempt rule against CEC, commissioners for not allowing Kazi Faruk’s party to run polls

The High Court today issued a contempt of court rule against the chief election commissioner, four election commissioners and Election Commission’s secretary for not allowing Oikyaboddho Nagorik Andolon to run the upcoming general election.

In the rule, the court asked the CEC, four commissioners and the EC secretary to explain in four weeks why legal actions should not be taken against them for committing contempt of court by not allowing the party to contest in the polls.

The HC bench of Justice Mumnoon Rahman and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das came up with the rule following a contempt of court petition filed by Oikyaboddho Nagorik Andolon, a political party led by Dr Kazi Faruk Ahmed.

Petitioner’s lawyer advocate Manzill Murshid told The Daily Star that the Election Commission has registered it as a political party as per a HC directive.

The Okyaboddho Nagorik Andolon is now a registered political party but the EC has refused to allow it to contest in the December 30 election which is a violation of the HC order, he said.

On October 16, the High Court today cleared the way for Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon to contest the next parliamentary election.

The court stayed the EC’s decision that cancelled the registration of Oikyaboddha Nagorik Andolon with the commission.
