Nazrul's family for fresh investigation
Family members of slain city panel mayor Nazrul Islam yesterday demanded withdrawal of Investigating Officer Mamunur Rashid Mandal of the sensational seven-murder case.
They also called for a reinvestigation of the case by a new IO.
The demands came a day after the police submitted the charge sheet of the case to a Narayanganj court.
Speaking at a press conference at her Siddhirganj residence, Nazrul's widow Selina Islam, also the plaintiff, alleged that the charge sheet did not contain the names of five people who had been named as accused in the murder case.
“The five had threatened to kill him [Nazrul] just two weeks before the incident,” she claimed.
The charge sheet contained 35 names, including prime accused Nur Hossain and three sacked officials of Rapid Action Battalion.
Nazrul's father-in-law Shahidul Islam alleged that the investigators submitted the charge sheet without interrogating the six who were accused by Selina of committing the crime.
Family members of the other victims were present at the press conference.
Contacted, IO Mamunur Rashid Mandal, also the officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of police in Narayanganj, claimed that the charge sheet was “clear and unbiased”.
He said no guilty person was spared and no innocent was implicated in the case.
Nazrul, his three aides, senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and two others were abducted in Narayanganj on April 27 last year around the same time.
Six bodies were found in the Shitalakkhya on April 30 and the other the following day.
Soon after the incident, Nur Hossain fled to India. He is now behind bars in West Bengal for illegal entry.
Sacked Rab officials Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana allegedly executed the killing mission in exchange for money. They are now in jail.
