Man sent to jail over torturing 7-yr-old
A man was sent to jail on Friday after he tortured a 7-year-old boy for alleged theft at Mongla in the district.
Mongla police, following a tip off, rescued the boy named Shakil from a scrap store where he was found tied to scrap metal under the scorching mid-day sun, with several heavy iron rods placed on his lap, said Uttam Chatterjee, town sub-inspector (TSI) at Mongla Police Station.
Police arrested Shukkur, 48, an employee of the store, for child endangerment. A Mongla court later sent Shukkur to jail after police produced him before it.
Shakil's day labourer father, Shamim, filed a case with Mongla police in the evening the same day under Children Repression Prevention Act against Shukkur, the arrestee, and store owner Abul Hossain. Police are yet to arrest Abul.
TSI Uttam said he rescued Shakil and brought him to the police station after locals tipped him off about a boy being beaten up by two adult males at a scrap store near Rafiqul Iron Store on Mongla Traders Mosque Road.
The perpetrators were holding the boy on allegation of stealing, Uttam said, adding that the boy, however, refuted the allegation and said he found two small pieces of iron rods on the road and went to the scrap store to sell those.
Shakil is in good health now and the police are trying to apprehend the second accused in the case, said Lutfar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mongla Police Station.
