Aug 17 serial blasts: JMB man jailed for 10yrs
A Dhaka Court today sentenced a member of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment in a case filed in connection with bomb blast in front of Hotel Sheraton in Dhaka on August 17, 2005.
Judge Masud Parvez of the Special Tribunal-10 in Dhaka handed down the verdict in presence of convict Rezaul Karim Reza.
The court also fined him Tk 5,000, in default of which he will have to suffer three months more in the jail.
Three others accused were acquitted in the case as charges brought against him were not proved.
Reza and the three accused were arrested on August 20, 2005.
According to the case statement, a time bomb went off in front of the five-star hotel in the capital in 2005, part of JMB’s series bomb blast in 63 districts of the country.
On August 17, 2005, around 500 bombs went off at 300 locations in 63 out of the 64 districts across the country. The bombs exploded in half an hour from 11:30am. JMB, the banned Islamist militant outfit, claimed responsibility for the blasts.
