Music for the underprivileged
Goutam Arindam Barua, popularly known as Shelu Barua, is an established singer known for Nazrul Sangeet and songs of yesteryears. The singer recently formed the “Shelu Barua Listeners' Club”, through which he volunteers to teach music to the underprivileged. In a recent conversation with The Daily Star he talked about the initiative.
What's the impetus behind this initiative?
Shelu Barua: When I was teaching at the music college, I realised that there are many enthusiasts who cannot afford to learn music from professionals because of financial constraints. I felt like money shouldn't be a barrier for them. This led me to open the club.
How does the club function?
Shelu Barua: The club began its journey from my ancestral village in Chittagong. I have already conducted a workshop there for 20 participants and organised lessons for local music teachers. I will give basic training to the members of my club.
What are you looking forward to?
Shelu Barua: I have been running this club for six months. I am getting good feedback from listeners and fellow singers. I want to spread Bangla music across the world through this club. I will voluntarily teach music to the underprivileged. I have also invited other singers to join this noble cause.
What's your ultimate musical dream?
Shelu Barua: I want to spread my knowledge about music to newer generations. I want to teach them free of charge. If I can spread music, I will consider myself successful.
