Themed “People's Perception on Safe Cities for Women”, a daylong installation exhibition was organised at Zilla Shilpakala Academy, Chittagong on Tuesday.
Installations in different media including audio-effect, painting, slide-show and sculpture, homing in on the sexual harassment of women, stood on display at an exhibition organised by Bangladesh Institute of Theatre Arts (Bita) and ActionAid Bangladesh.
Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasni, a councillor and panel mayor of Chittagong City Corporation inaugurated the exhibition.
Bappa Chowdhury, programme coordinator of Bita, said, “The exhibition raised many questions such as how safe our cities are for the free movement of women, what we should do to make cities safe for women, the roles of local public representatives, police, town planners, transportation staff and every citizen in preventing sexual harassment of women. Girls are being harassed not only outside but also in their own homes. In many cases, girls are blamed for their harassment by males. It's high time we changed our attitude.”
The installations were created by three students of Fine Arts Institute of Chittagong University. Hossain Mahmood, a Master's student said his installations with audio-effects and drawing depicted the nature of harassment of women everywhere, including on the roads, in vehicles, educational institutions and workplaces.
Apart from Hossain, Jubilee Dewan and Suchayan Paul, students of MA of the same institute, also created artworks through installations that expressed the inner feelings of women after being harassed by men.
