4 of a family found dead in Keraniganj
A couple and their two children were found dead at a house in South Keraniganj area, on the outskirts of Dhaka, this morning.
On information, police recovered the bodies of the husband and wife, aged about 35 and 28 respectively, and their seven-year-old son and two-year-old daughter from the house at Kolakandi village around 10:00am, sources at South Keraniganj Police Station said.
Police picked up Sohel alias Sumon, caretaker of the house, to record his statement regarding the incident, Habibur Rahman, superintendent of police of Dhaka district, told The Daily Star.
Police suspect that the four were strangulated to death. But their names and identities could not be known immediately.
Sohel went to the house in the morning to receive payment of the rent, police said quoting the caretaker.
The payment was due as the tenants of the flat did not pay the rent while moving into the flat two months ago, police said.
The incident took place on the first floor of the six-storey building owned by one Shamsu Mia, who now live in Saudi Arabia, the victims’ neighbour at an adjacent flat, Hasina Begum, told The Daily Star.
Sohel saw the door open and entered into the flat in the morning, Hasina said adding that he (Sohel) saw legs under the bed.
Sohel also smelt bad odour at the place, Hasina said.
“Police reached here after getting information by locals and recovered the bodies,” SP Rahman said.
The hands and mouths of the bodies were tied with ropes, the SP said.
“We suspect that the murder might have taken place one or two days ago in a preplanned manner,” the police officer said.
He added that law enforcers are yet to find out who killed the four persons or why they did it,” Habibur said.
Police, quoting locals, said a man, named Rafique, rented the house two months back but later the family started living there identifying the man as their nephew.
The family did not have any contact with the locals as they used to go out of the house early in the morning and return late night, locals said.
