4 killed as truck rams easy bike
Four people were killed and three others injured as a truck rammed a battery-run easy bike on Jessore-Khulna highway at Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore yesterday.
The Jessore-bound goods-laden truck lost control amid drizzle and hit the battery-run vehicle from the opposite direction at Noapara around 3:30pm, killing four on the spot, said Sergeant Bulbul of Noapara Highway Police Station.
The dead are Rokeya Begum, 40, of North Dihi village under Fultala upazila of Khulna, Mithu Biswas, 45, of Agarhat village of Narail, Bodiar Rahman, 37, of Abhaynagar upazila's Gazipur village and the easy-bike driver Rony, 30, of Rajghat of the same upazila.
The truck driver escaped immediately after the accident but the vehicle was seized, said the policeman.
The three other passengers of the easy bike were rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital and Jessore Medical College Hospital in critical condition, he added.
After the accident in the afternoon, angry locals demonstrated blocking the Jessore-Khulna highway at Abhaynagar for 45 minutes.
Demonstrators left the highway following requests by police.
The bodies were sent to Jessore Medical College Hospital for autopsy reports, said Sergeant Bulbul.
