20 hurt as AL factions in Kushtia clash again
At least 20 people, including a woman, were injured when police fired gunshots to disperse two clashing factions of ruling Awami League at Gopalpur village in Sadar upazila on Saturday night.
Critically injured Mozammel Haq, 40, Beauty Khatun, 20, Ahmed Ali, 25, and Bisharat Ali were admitted to Kushtia Medical College Hospital.
At least four incidents of infighting occurred since July 6, as a sequel to previous enmity between the two groups, one led by Sawpon Biswas and the other by Golam Mustafa of the village.
Police said supporters of both the groups were locked in an altercation at Jhoudia Bazar around 8:30pm, over the recent acid attack on three members of Ayub Ali's family, a supporter of Swapon Biswas.
At one stage, both the group equipped with sharp weapons attacked each other triggering a chase and counter chase in the area.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and fired several blank gunshots to disperse the two factions, to bring the situation under control.
At least 20 people were injured during the incidents.
Mir Shariful Haq Janak, officer in-charge of Islamic University Police Station, said police fired around 15 blank shots to bring the situation under control.
None, however, was injured in police firing, added the OC.
Earlier, criminals threw acid through an window of Ayub Ali's house around 10:30pm when his widowed sister Saleha Khatun, daughter Sonia Khatun, 20, and son Titumir Hossain, 13, were asleep, allegedly following an altercation between Ayub Ali and Golam Mustafa.
Sonia and Titumir are still undergoing treatment at hospitals.
