2 'muggers' killed in ‘shootouts’
Two alleged muggers were killed during separate “shootouts” with police in Comilla and Pabna districts early today.
Azad was killed in Comilla “shootout” while Jahangir, 26, in Pabna, reports our correspondents.
“Jahangir was killed by the bullet fired by his cohorts,” SM Mostain Hossain, additional superintendent of police of Pabna, claimed.
In Comilla, a team of Detective Branch of police challenged a gang near Alekhar Char on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Sadar upazila around 5:00am following their suspicious movement.
They are preparing to rob a Dhaka-bound microbus, police said.
Sensing danger, the gang opened fire targeting the DB personnel, prompting them to retaliate with bullets.
Azad came in the line of fire and was hit by a bullet during the gunfight, said Khorshed Alam, officer-in-charge of Comilla Kotwali Police Station.
Doctors declared him dead when he was taken to Comilla Medical College and Hospital, said hospital sources.
Police picked up four people and also seized a pistol and a machete from the spot.
Our Pabna correspondent reports, a patrol team of police launched a drive in front of Raju cinema hall in Ishwardi where a gang of criminals gathered for mugging.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the muggers fired gunshots, prompting them to fire back that triggered a “gunfight”.
Jahangir suffered bullet wounds during the gunfight and died on the spot.
Police seized a pistol from the spot.
