10 killed in less than a month
Ten people were killed in Satkhira in last 27 days as Jamaat-Shibir men unleashed violence on political rivals.
The southern district has seen waves of violence since November 21 during hartals and blockades enforced by the BNP-led 18-party alliance. Jamaat is a key component of the opposition combine.
Awami League leaders said the killings were designed to weaken the morale of the ruling party men.
The worsening law and order has panicked the local residents. Journalists are thinking twice before travelling outside the district town.
Yesterday, two Awami League men and a boy were killed as Jamaat-Shibir men unleashed brutal attacks on them.
The dead are Azizur Rahman, 40, Joj Ali, 35, and Riad Hossain, 10.
Apart from killing the three, activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir yesterday vandalised, looted and torched around 50 houses and businesses of AL supporters and religious minorities in different areas of the district, said Satkhira police.
In Kalaroa upazila, Jamaat-Shibir men broke open the door of the house of Azizur, AL president of ward no-6, around 12:30am and hacked him to death.
In another act of savagery, Jamaat-Shibir men dragged AL activist Joj Ali out of his house at Saraskathi village around 3:00am and killed him by slitting his throat.
In Sadar Upazila, law enforcers recovered the bullet-hit body of Riad of Kuchpukur village from Baladanga area in the morning, said police.
Riad’s uncle Abdul Latif said criminals kidnapped his nephew from near their house last night. He complained that Jamaat men might have kidnapped Riad taking advantage of the volatile political situation.
The kid might have been the victim of Jamaat’s brutality as his family members support the Awami League, added Latif.
Earlier, Jamaat-Shibir men since November 21 had killed six AL activists and a freedom fighter.
