Watamote

“Watamote” is short for a ridiculously long title “Watashi ga Motenai no wa do Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!” which translates to “No matter how I look at it, it's you guys' fault I'm not popular!” The 12 part series narrates the story of a teenage girl, Tomoko Kuroki, starting high school, who comes to the realisation that she's not as popular as she thinks she is.
Tomoko finds out that although she's very well-acquainted with the world of anime, manga and videogames, in real life she's a socially inept loner. Her illusions shattered, she attempts to achieve popularity through various inane plans.
The series, mostly told through Tomoko's inner monologues, is light hearted and wacky. There are a couple of cameos and references from other animes, which fans are sure to appreciate. Tomoko is a very interesting, bizarre character. She's very different from the typical female anime character; messy hair, dark circles on baggy eyes, always slouching, unlike the archetypal cutesy moe characters we usually see. Her inability to make normal conversation, the odd way she views the world, her anomalousness, strangely make her a very likeable character. I found her random fantasies the most hilarious parts of the episodes. It's fun to watch her desperately keep trying to change her looks and her personality, even after some erratic ideas fail. Her relationship with her athletic and more popular younger brother Tomoki, although slightly peculiar, is also very amusing to watch. I think on some level we all can relate to Tomoko's social life; I know I do. The series does depict the troubles of adolescence quite well. It does get a little weird in places, bordering on plain creepy, but never crossing the line to anything obscene. Tomoko just has a far-out, over-active imagination. The animation is ok, nothing special, except some of the scenes where we go into Tomoko's vivid imagination. I don't like how it ended though, nothing really changes, and in fact Tomoko's character doesn't actually develop, but the manga is still ongoing. The first season ended last year. I wouldn't say it's a waste of time at all; it will surely get you laughing quite a lot.
