Tareque, Arif booked for murder
Former Rab officers Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Maj Arif Hossain were shown arrested this afternoon in the case filed for abduction and murder of seven people including Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam.
Senior Judicial Magistrate KM Mohiuddin in Narayanganj also put the duo on an eight-day fresh remand in response to an appeal by the investigators for 10 days’ for each of them.
They were produced before the court around 5:20pm on expiry of their five-day remand, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.
Hours after the arrest of the officers, who were sent on retirement following allegations of their involvement in the crime for more, were placed on a five-day remand on April 17.
Lt Col Tareque was the commanding officer of Rab-11 at the time of the occurrence while Maj Arif Hossain was posted at the same battalion of the elite force.
On April 27, Nazrul and his four aides and Chandan and his driver were kidnapped from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road around the same time in broad daylight.
Six bodies, including those of Nazrul and Chandan, were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river on April 30, and another was found the following day. The other victims are Moniruzzaman Swapan, Tajul Islam, Liton, Jahangir and Ibrahim.
