A beer for every goalkeeper that conceded to Messi
Lionel Messi made history on Tuesday, slotting home his 644th goal for Barcelona — surpassing Pele as the all-time leading goal scorer for a single club. With those 644 goals, Messi has made life difficult for plenty of goalkeepers.
So Messi is offering a toast in their honor.
Budweiser is sending a custom beer bottle to all 160 goalkeepers Messi has scored past. For some, they'll receive nearly an entire case of beer. Messi slotted 21 goals past former Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves, and another 18 against Gorka Iraizoz, the former Athletic Bilbao shot-stopper.
Gianluigi Buffon, the legendary Italian goalkeeper, had long boasted a perfect record against Messi. But then the Argentine scored twice against Buffon in 2017 — so Buffon received two Budweiser bottles, labeled No. 514 and 515.
"@budfootball... Thanks for the beers. I'll take it as a compliment. We have great battles over the years! Congratulations on breaking the 644 record #Messi! it really is an unbelievable achievement. Cheers!," Buffon Tweeted yesterday.
Messi has responded to Atletico Madrid shotstopper Jan Oblak praising his record, hailing him as "one of the best goalkeepers in the world" while admitting he relishes the challenge of trying to best him.
"It's nice to face one another," Messi said. "He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment, and it's always good to fight against the best ones," Messi said during an interview with Bud Football.
Oblak has conceded 10 goals to Messi and during an exclusive interview with Sky Sports had talked about Messi's achievement after the Argentine overtook Pele's single club record with his 644th goal for Barcelona
"He has scored many goals against me. Too many!" Oblak had said. "But he is a great player, an amazing player, the best player."
Oblak yesterday tweeted that he did not quite enjoy conceding goals but said Messi brought out the best in him.
"Congratulations on your great achievement of 644 goals, Leo. I never like conceding but the challenge of stopping you brings the best out of goalkeepers too. Thank you @budfootball for the special gift," Oblak tweeted.
