‘Time to take responsibly, settle the ODI team’: Bangladesh’s new captain Miraz  

Newly appointed ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz is confident that the experience he has gained under various senior players will help him lead Bangladesh effectively in his upcoming role.

Miraz made his ODI debut in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, in 2017 under Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. Fittingly, his full-time ODI captaincy journey will begin in the same country next month. Over the years, he has played under the leadership of experienced campaigners like Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, as well as peers such as Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto, who came through the ranks around the same time as him.

"When I debuted for the Bangladesh team, it was under Mashrafe bhai. I played under many captains and it's a happy moment for me as I learned a lot of things from them which I can use during my captaincy tenure," Miraz said at a press conference in Mirpur on Friday.

Currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI rankings -- their lowest position in two decades -- Bangladesh are in need of a turnaround, and Miraz hopes the team can rise from this slump and see the Tigers transform into a settled ODI side within a year.

"Of course, it's our time to take responsibility. We have played a sufficient number of international matches for the last eight to nine years. Junior players have to perform the way we did when we started. I will try to help them as the seniors did and want to give such a dressing room so that they feel all are with them," said the 27-year-old all-rounder.

"It is good for a captain to get this job for a long time as you can boost up the team. As I got captaincy for a year, I want to make the team better in this time frame.

"I think it's time to settle the ODI team. Two of our senior cricketers have retired from the ODI team. Those who will get opportunity need to use it and I think within one year, we can set up the team," he added.
