Six to die for killing police telecom staff

A speedy trial tribunal in Dhaka yesterday gave six people death penalty for killing an office assistant of Rajarbagh Police Telecom in Dhaka in 2006.

They are Abdul Latif, the then accountant of the telecom office; Anwar Hossain Sarkar and Hafizul Hossain, office assistants; and Wasim, Kajal Miah alias Kajol, and Babul alias Tapon Chakraborty.

Judge Shahed Nuruddin of Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 also sentenced Shamsul Alam and Razan Miah to life term imprisonment for killing Golam Shamsul Haider, assistant accountant of the telecom office at Rajarbagh Police Lines.

He also fined the lifers Tk 1, 00,000 each, in default, to serve one more year in jail.

Among the convicts, Anwar, Wasim, Kajal and Shamsul are in jail while the others have been absconding since they were granted bail on different dates.

They murdered Shamsul by slitting his throat before his Motijheel residence on June 9, 2006 as he came to know about the corruption against several office staff including Latif, according to the prosecution.
