A seven-month-old baby was killed and four others of a family were injured in an explosion in Narayanganj city in the early hours of today.
The incident happened when the septic tank of a two-storey building exploded around 4.45am, said Abdullah Al Arifin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire Service.
Accumulated gas could have caused the explosion, the fire official said.
How the gas accumulated cannot be established unless a thorough investigation is conducted, he added.
The deceased is Ahmed Hossain, seven-month-old son of Tafazzal Hossain of Baburail area in the city.
The injured include the father Tafazzal (50), his wife Ferdousi Begum (30), daughter Halima Akhtar (11) and elder son Mohammad Hossain (9), our Narayanganj correspondent reports quoting police.
After the explosion, Tafazzal and his family were rushed to Narayanganj General Hospital, where doctors declared the baby dead, said Tafazzal's brother Rakib Uddin.
Later, the remaining family members were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as the condition of three of them were critical, Rakib added.
Tazzal and his family have been living at the ground floor of the building, and the septic tank was built beneath their room, the brother said.
