Changes in quota system for FFs' children

The cabinet yesterday decided to introduce a nationwide quota system for the children of freedom fighters in government services through modification of the existing district quota system in order to make sure that all seats reserved for them are fulfilled.
As per the decision, the new quota system would be applied in government, semi-government and autonomous institutions.
Under the existing system, the children of freedom fighters in many districts did not get jobs because of limited seats under the quota while seats in many other districts remained vacant.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who presided over the meeting, placed the proposal and the cabinet approved it.
Presently, 30 percent of government jobs are kept reserved for the children of freedom fighters, but the quota was never fulfilled since the number of candidates varies from district to district.
After the meeting, the Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told reporters that the 10 percent quota for women and 5 percent quota for tribal people would also be brought under similar system.
The meeting also approved sand body and soil management draft bill and the ratification of the Beijing amendment to the Montreal protocol on the ban on the use of ozone depleting substances.
It also gave a directive that from now on the superintendent of police (SP) of each district must attend every meeting called by a deputy commissioner (DC).
The SPs usually avoid the meetings called by the DCs because of a row over status. According to the directives, the DCs would now act as the chief coordinator at the meeting, sources said.
