Mariners threaten movement for want of jobs
Marine graduates today threatened to go for a tougher movement if the government fails to ensure their jobs at home and abroad.
The cadets blamed the government’s negligence and private recruiting agencies’ corruptions for not getting enough jobs in foreign ships.
The graduates demanded the job security after forming a human chain in front of Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
Mainly the Middle Eastern countries, Malaysia and Singapore are the destinations for the Bangladeshi marine cadets. But the Middle Eastern countries are currently not issuing visas for them.
Around 800 graduates -- 300 from public institutions and 500 others from 18 private institutions -- complete their education every year against only 88 government posts, said Shershah, a graduate from Bangladesh Marine Academy in Chittagong.
“Many students are spending at least Tk 15 to 16 lakh each for completing their education under a private institution while the public academies’ students spend Tk 3 or 4 lakh each. But there is no guarantee for jobs,” Imat Tanvir, another marine cadet.
Neighbouring India is ensuring at least 14,000 marine cadets’ jobs to different foreign ships as the Indian government is very sincere in this regard, he added.
“But the Bangladesh government is not doing anything for us. Rather, some recruiting agencies are doing business in the name of providing us jobs,” Tanvir mentioned.
Another cadet Imran Wahid Emon said there is no future in this field as the government is sincere to arrange jobs for them at home and abroad.
