ICCB to mark 20 years with international conference
The International Chamber of Commerce-Bangladesh (ICCB) will organise an international conference on Asian economic growth, trade and investment in Dhaka.
The two-day conference on 'global economic recovery: Asian perspective' will begin on October 25 at Bangabandhu International Conference and Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka.
The Bangladesh chapter of ICC, the world business organisation, will hold the conference to mark 20 years of its presence in the country.
The conference is expected to be attended by 500 delegates representing ministers, industry and business leaders, experts, economists, ICC leaders and academics from home and abroad, Mahbubur Rahman, president of ICCB, said at a press briefing in Dhaka yesterday.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and UNCTAD Secretary General Mukhisa Kituyi will attend the event, he said.
The world economy, five years after the global financial crisis, is showing signs of bouncing back this year with Asia, led by China, Japan and India, is playing a significant role, Rahman said.
It is expected that Asia will continue to lead the way for sustained world growth and world leaders have to prioritise development of an integrated global strategy to sustain the projected world growth momentum, he said.
The ICCB conference will allow stakeholders representing public and private sectors, industry and business leaders, policymakers, think-tanks and academics to share their thoughts and ideas on the strategies that the Asian countries can adopt to maintain sustained economic growth, he said.
It will also be an opportunity for the country's business leaders and policymakers not only to explore new horizons of business, but make an effective use of international opportunities through interaction with the delegates coming from abroad, Rahman said.
The conference has been divided into four sessions to focus on particular themes, including global economic recovery as a contemporary reality; realities and challenges to Asian growth; investment promotion in Asia; and effects of the Bali outcome on future trade.
The Paris-based ICC, global business organisation, was established in 1919 to promote free market economy and facilitate cross-border business transactions. It is the largest and most thoroughly represents business organisations of the world. Member companies in over 127 countries have interests spanning in every sector of private enterprise.
Bangladesh National Committee of ICC, established in 1994, comprises the major chambers of commerce and industry, business associations, stock exchanges, banks, non-banking financial institutions, insurance companies, transnational companies, law and accounting firms and corporate houses. ICCB also works on harmonisation of trade law and rules, legal reforms, updating businesses with the ICC rules and standards for cross border business transactions, just like the parent entity.
The upcoming conference on global economic recovery is being organised for the first time by all the major chambers and associations of the country who have joined hands together to arrange such international conference, said Rahman.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association are among co-organisers of the conference.
DCCI President Mohammad Shahjahan Khan also attended the press conference.
In 2010, ICCB organised a similar conference on Energy for Growth, coinciding with the chamber's 15 years in Bangladesh.
