62 jailed for catching hilsa in two dists
A mobile court jailed 25 fishermen for 15 and 30 days in Barisal yesterday for catching hilsa flouting a government ban marking the breeding season.
The mobile court of the fisheries department conducted drives in different rivers including the Meghna, Kirtankhola, and Arial Khan in the district, said Md Wahiduzzaman, fishery officer in Barisal.
During the drives, 25 fishermen were detained for violating the 11-day ban on hilsa fishing that started from October 5.
Among them, 13 of Hizla and two of Muladi were jailed for one month each. The other 10 of Sadar upazila were jailed for 15 days.
Our Chandpur correspondent reports, a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Runa Laila fined and jailed 40 fishermen in the district for fishing hilsa from the rivers Padma and Meghna.
In Sadar upazila, 16 were jailed for one year each while three were fined Tk 5,000 each.
In Haimchar, 19 were given one year imprisonment each while in Matlab Uttar, one got a two-year imprisonment and another was jailed for one year.
