Latif Siddique faces barrage of criticism
Different political and social organisations yesterday demanded arrest and punishment of the doomed Awami League leader Abdul Latif Siddique for his Sunday's comments in New York that he deplored Hajj and Tablighi Jamaat more than the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Latif was criticised by the party colleagues, too.
Latif who was in New York as part of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's entourage was addressing a reception arranged by Tangail expatriates living in the US state.
Criticising him, AL acting president Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury urged all to turn a deaf ear to what Latif said.
In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said he should be punished for the remarks.
Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad, also a special envoy to the premier, echoed him.
Bikolpodhara Bangladesh, Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, Hefajat-e Islam, and Jamaat-e-Islami also condemned Siddique's comments. Meanwhile, Hefajat also brought out processions in different areas of the capital demanding Latif's punishment.
